Fire Extinguishers: What You Need to Know Before the Flames Start

A fire extinguisher can stop a small fire from becoming a major disaster — but only if you know how to use it and choose the right type.

Types of Fire Extinguishers:

  • Class A: For wood, cloth, paper (ordinary combustibles)
  • Class B: For flammable liquids like gasoline or oil
  • Class C: For electrical fires
  • Class D/K: For industrial or kitchen fires

Most homes benefit from a multi-purpose ABC extinguisher.

Check Your Extinguisher:

  • Ensure it’s easily accessible — not buried in a closet
  • Check the pressure gauge monthly
  • Replace or recharge after use, even partially
